Highland cows arrival on the homestead

The cows have arrived. It was a 3 hour round trip drive and 2 hours to load the things but they have arrived.
We initially had purchased the bull, cow, and their 1 year old heifer calf. However after they were loaded the bull went berserk and started throwing up the calf in the air and freaking out. If we had left them in there we are convinced the calf would be dead. So the bull was let out and we decided to not get him.
The lady said you really had to watch yourself around him in the field and I really have no desire to have any dangerous animals at our farm especially with kiddos and future boarders.
After that loading experience I decided, yea I can definitely raise cattle for beef.
The mom and daughter pair we will be keeping at our farm and most likely AI breeding at some point. The cow may actually be bred as she was with the bull and the calf needs another year to mature. So for now, they will be hanging out eating and gaining some weight. Both of them need some weight to be healthy.

We unloaded them into the field and they settled in nicely. It was weird being woken up by the cow bellowing (apparently she’s a fairly noisy cow).

The SO was extremely pleased with the purchase of these cows. The pros are also cow manure is more fertile than horse manure for the pasture. Cows are a good complement to horses in pastures so as we rotate pastures it should help out.
We shall see where this cow adventure leads us.
happy tuesday.
