Homestead Surprise

Thursday evening I had got home an hour late because I had a later meeting at work. Horses got fed as normal and then I went to go feed the cows.
It was odd that they didn’t come to me but I figured the time was a little off. I walked out to the field to call them when I saw a dog running around with them. Super weird I could not figure out what was going on.
A second later I realized that it was a calf!!! Mama cow had freshly given birth to a baby.

We did not even know she was pregnant nor did the lady we got her from! Especially since she has a little over 1 year old heifer on her side still. I am so glad I have been feeding her and had put out a round bale of hay!

Happy Surprise, mama and baby are doing good! I have definitely upped mama cows food to make sure she gets all her nutrients in.
Talk about a surprise I’m still not over it. I still feel like such a newbie when it comes to cows. I’m so glad mama cow was an experienced mother. She aggressively pushes her calf to nurse, so he is very sturdy.

More to come for sure on our cow journey. If anyone is in the market for a boy smaller highland cow--let me know! We definitely won't be keeping him as he would eventually try to breed his mama and his sister.
